Sound Off for Jan. 3

The case for marijuana

I’m about as conservative as an honest person gets. I say let them grow it, let them smoke or eat it and let them make clothes and other useful items out of it. Just don’t let the government keep exploiting it.

East Biloxi street conditions

I don’t know about the Biloxi City Council, but I do know Mayor Andrew “FoFo” Gilich drives through Biloxi on a daily basis. I see that black city vehicle everyday going from one end of town to the other. No doubt some of the streets are a mess. But, that situation didn’t just pop up. It started with a rebuilding project that was hastily conceived, poorly engineered and ineptly constructed. The mayor stepped into a no-win situation when he was elected. Even so, if the writer of the Sound Off wants to be fair about a criticism, the person needs to “take a drive through the city.” Overall, the road work that has been completed is very good. And, when the project is finally completed (most) everyone will be happy and proud.

Put the blame where it belongs

To the writer of “Guns kill people:” I’ve never seen a gun kill without a person attached to the trigger end. Don’t blame the gun, blame the person. Concerning auto accidents, don’t blame the car, blame the person. People are doing bad things, not the object they are using. Put the blame where it belongs.

Checking car insurance

Twenty years ago, HB 621 was passed requiring mandatory auto liability insurance. An estimated 30% of Mississippi drivers still do not comply with the law. I commend Ocean Springs for attempting to encourage irresponsible drivers to purchase auto liability insurance by capturing auto tag photos and sending citations to uninsured motorists. However, the only effective way to accomplish this mission is to require residents to show proof of insurance when renewing auto tags.

Busted taillights

The complaint about all the busted taillights has a reason. Mississippi got rid of the car inspection requirements and no one is monitoring any infractions.
