Sound Off for Nov. 12
Hybrid, electric cars are expensive
Hybrid and electric cars are fine if you can afford one. The big problem right now is getting food and materials transported across the U.S. The increased fuel costs exacerbate the problem of fewer drivers. Our unlimited supply of cleaner burning natural gas in this county can replace the high-polluting diesel trucks. That solution was presented to a Democrat Congress by the G. W. Bush administration. They ignored it.
Alcohol is the problem
Good for Gov. Tate Reeves. He wants to limit the amount of marijuana that people can access legally each month. Now he should lead an initiative to limit the amount of alcohol that people can legally access each month. Alcohol has caused far more problems and tragedies than marijuana has or will. If he doesn’t do this, he is being hypocritical.
Mandatory vaccines
Safety measures have been in place and enforced for as long as I can remember. Many are mandated by OSHA and other agencies and employers to protect their workers. Any employee refusing to follow safety mandates will be reprimanded and if refusal continues, will be fired. Also, the legal right of the Commander in Chief to order troops to be vaccinated in order to maintain an effective fighting force began with Washington. It is a sensible thing to vaccinate the armed forces against disease, and every member of the armed forces swore an oath to obey their superior officers.
Fix our roads
Gulfport, the Mississippi Department of Transportation or Harrison County should do something about U.S. 49. The manhole cover in the southbound lane at 14th Street and Highway 49 is horrible. If you’re not aware of it and drive over it, you run the risk of damaging your car. Next one is the railroad crossing just north of Creosote Road on the highway. Not only locals travel these routes — so do tourists. I wonder how many have to get front end alignments after riding on our streets. Please fix our roads!
Gautier project
I hope my great-great grandchildren will live long enough to see the completion of Gautier’s Martin Bluff Road widening project.
Post vaccine status at restaurants
The Coast Restaurant Group should post signs at all their establishments stating employees are not required to be vaccinated. I know other restaurants that do require all their employees to get the COVID vaccine. I will not spend my money and patronize restaurants that refuse to require their staff to get vaccinated.
Reeves is right
Gov. Tate Reeves is doing the right thing by refusing to sign the “medical” marijuana bill as it exists. Mississippi was bamboozled into voting for “medical” marijuana. The slick ads promoting the initiative played on compassion for medical advantages that are minuscule at best. The media and community leaders failed miserably to present both sides of the issue. The true agenda of “medical” marijuana is legalized recreational use.
