Sound Off for Sept. 18, 2020

Telemedicine

Good article on telemedicine in Tuesday’s Sun Herald. Mental health is a natural application for that technology. When I was doing project management for the AF Surgeon General’s Office several years ago, we did a couple of telemedicine projects at the Keesler Medical Center, although neither in mental health. However, we were aware of one psychiatrist at Walter Reed who did her entire practice using telemedicine. That was over 10 years ago. It took the pandemic to get the rest of the profession’s attention.

Manhole solution

Actually, there is a solution to the manhole cover problem. You’ll notice that they all seem to be right down one of the wheel tracks. They are initially almost level with the street, but when they put a new 3 inches of asphalt on, you have a 3 inch chug hole. If the planners would put the access tunnels down the center of roads rather than to the side, then cars could straddle the manhole covers.

Money problem

Manhole covers can and should be raised to grade, even with pavement. They can also be tilted to conform with the slope of the pavement in most cases. The problem is not with engineering or technology, the problem is the time and money required to do the job correctly!

Time to unify

So glad I’m not part of the Trump cult that has to protest the NFL. Drew Brees is such a good person and is being vilified just because he decided to listen to other people’s point of view instead of being rigid in his own opinions.

Fun while it lasted

I have been through a lot of really bad times and few good times with the Saints. They’re my team. I want to watch, but I just can’t since the NFL continues to pump this bilge and expects me to drink it. It’s was fun while it lasted.

Flag vote

Why even have a vote? There were several flags that were as good as the only choice we have. Already, many have complained of the wording being on the flag. When there is only one choice to vote a yes or no, to me, it isn’t even a vote. Why don’t we have at least three choices for something this important to the future of our wonderful state?
