Sound Off

Sound Off for Aug. 21, 2020

All gods

To all non-Christians, our new flag says nothing about a “Christian God.” It says only “In God.” If I’m not mistaken, the religions mentioned believe in some form of “a God,” so it covers them all.

State flag

I agree with “Outsiders” about the exclusion of other faiths on the proposed state flag. To quote the great American patriot Thomas Paine, “As to what are called national religions, we may, with as much propriety, talk of national Gods. It is either political craft or the remains of the Pagan system, when every nation had its separate and particular deity.”

In God we trust

Regarding the Sound Off expressing concern that non-Christian residents and visitors will feel like outsiders by the Mississippi flag having “In God We Trust” on it, it seems more likely they would see those words on all U.S. money before they notice it on our flag. Those words are required by law to appear on all of our currency. Also, “In God we trust” is the official motto of the United States.

Post office not all bad

Yay! My birthday card from my son finally showed up today. Mailed on July 22. I guess the congressional talking-to of the postmaster general may have done some good. He took all those bags of mail he was hiding under his desk and put them into circulation.

We need CTC

Before the negative gossip starts, there is no reason to consider canceling Cruisin’ The Coast. I recently attended a similar event in Louisville, Ky., there were over 100,000 people attending. Mask were required to attend indoor exhibits, as well as social distancing outdoors and mask were used in crowded areas etc. CTC is a major event for Mississippi and the Coast that should go on as planned. It’s good for MS the economy.

Comment request

Will the Sun Herald please ask Steven Palazzo, Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker what they intend to do about the Trump administration’s plans to cut $2.2 billion from the military healthcare budget? Doubt they’ll do much.
