Sound Off for Aug. 19, 2020

Pay it forward

I recently witnessed an act of kindness that lifted my spirits. I was at a grocery market, in line to pay behind two other people, when I noticed a delay. The cashier was taking back the items the lady in front had tried to pay for; obviously, there was a problem with her credit card. She stayed in line but was on the phone with someone. The gentleman in front of me paid for his items, gave the cashier an extra $20 bill, and left. I would like to give him a shoutout!

Mask protection

I thought the whole purpose of wearing face masks is to prevent the spread of COVID-10. If that’s the case, why are people worried about in-person voting? If that’s not the case, why are we under state orders to wear one?

Selfish

How selfish it is for Christian Collegiate Academy to ignore Gov. Reeves’ mandate for masks. There is nothing Christian about subjecting your students, your staff, and our community to COVID. Require masks like every other local school and save the lives of grandparents.

Economic pandemic

In reference to “lack of respect” stating all casinos and bars should close, forcing people out of work and closing down business owners is an economic pandemic. One that leads to government bailouts backed by the taxpayers with no more jobs to pay the tax!

Get a grip

Dear “Shame,” who died and left you in charge of the mask police? How dare you try to shame those young ladies! Try these facts on for size: total population of Mississippi - 2.989,260. Total COVID cases - 72,412. Total deaths - 2,095. Percentage of people that don’t have it - 97.578. Fatality rate - 0.070%. Those ladies have a better chance of getting hit by a car than dying from COVID.

Sad day

Mississippi ranks 45th out of 50 states in its COVID-19 case rate. Now comes Gov. Reeves to say on national television — with a straight face — that “hospitalizations and fatalities” are poor indicators of performance. He should be too ashamed of himself to accept a paycheck. What a sad day for our state.
