Sound Off for Aug. 18, 2020
Difference from Canada
A few days ago, COVID-19 took the lives of 1,450 people in the United States in one day but only four in Canada. Thinking or learning about the reasons for the difference and responding appropriately would help us reduce the number of future deaths. Just blaming those you’re against won’t help.
FIX IT, LONG BEACH
Since the Long Beach high school has opened, traffic at 3 p.m. is backed up on Cleveland almost to Railroad street. Cars are blocking the northbound lane of Cleveland, waiting their turn to pick up kids. Unfortunately, I have to travel that route about the same time and I have to take my life in my own hands, trying to maneuver around the long line of traffic using the southbound lane. Something needs to be done about this now.
Love that flag
I read with sadness that the mosquito flag was out of contention as the new Mississippi flag. It would be great to have the state “bird” on the flag. What they really missed was the opportunity to have a love bug flag.
Shame on you
On Saturday, a carnival organization held their annual golf tournament. As hundreds crowded the parking lot, there was not one mask in sight, and most definitely no social distancing! Really young ladies, is Mardi Gras more important then your life or the lives you may come in contact with?
Curbside pickup
Do you still have library materials you checked out before this pandemic closed the libraries down? If so, please call your library to arrange for curbside pickup. If you live in Harrison County and have season 7 of “Monk,” please return it as soon as possible, thanks!
American flag
I take exception to the article by Brian Allee-Walsh. Our great flag in part is a tribute to those who lost their lives in keeping our freedom. The red strips signify the bloodshed for those who sacrificed all. Allee-Walsh sees kneeling during the National Anthem as peaceful protest. I see it as complete lack of respect for our country and those who died defending our liberty.
