Sound Off

Sound Off for Aug. 7, 2020

Ducklings

Saw about ten baby ducks at Gulfport Harbor boat launch today. Incredibly cute. Hope there is food around there for them and they survive.

Hard truths

“Hard times call for hard truths” in reference to Mississippi school openings. Wow. Such hypocrisy from our governor. Where was this thinking when he allowed the soccer entourage from Jackson to go to Spain earlier this year amid the pandemic outbreak over there?

Death wish, really?

The Sound Off suggesting that Gov. Reeves has a “death wish” for opening classrooms now is so over-the-top and politically motivated that it belongs on the comics page, not as a Sound Off.

Roosters

Who is complaining about chickens in Ocean Springs? I live in a neighborhood with a large brood. Unless they lie when asked, we all like them. Several neighbors feed them. The mayor needs to focus on what concerns citizens.

Defeats the purpose

In agreement with “Bar Rules,” the casinos should also have to comply with no selling or serving of alcohol after 11 p.m. The young people flock to the casinos after the bars close and are wandering around in groups drinking, not seated, as is the rule in bars. They do not wear masks, as they are drinking. Allowing the casinos to serve alcohol totally defeats Gov. Reeves’ mandate and just hurts the bar owners.

Credit due

Tommy Schafer was not the first mayor of the city of Diamondhead! That honor belongs to Chuck Ingraham, who worked tirelessly, “in the trenches,” to put the city on the map! It’s true that Tommy was the first elected mayor and did a great job, but I really do believe that credit should be given when credit is earned and due.

One-sided

Your reporter wrote a one-sided article about back-to-school policy. The two people she quoted on page one had a definite agenda biased on delaying classroom instruction. All the people I spoke with were in favor of starting classroom instruction with precautionary guidelines in effect. It’s reasonable to presume some would agree with delay, but I believe it is far less than the article suggested.
