Sound Off for Aug. 6, 2020

Too soon

The Catholic Diocese of Biloxi need to delay the start of school until after Labor Day. The virus is getting worse, we are seeing outrageous numbers of positive cases on a daily basis. The Mississippi Gulf Coast did not have many positive cases in March when schools were closed. Now, the school districts are ready to welcome the children back in the middle of the peak. We want to keep our children healthy and safe!

SMH

Everything you print always alludes to the coronavirus. I bet if a gigantic asteroid was forecast to smash the planet to smithereens your headline would be, Giant Asteroid To Pulverize Earth Amidst The Covid 19 Pandemic.

Start now

The critics say hold off on starting school. Many districts have well-thought out plans. If we delay now, what happens next month? Another delay. Classroom education is a must. Virtual is wasting both teachers’ and students’ time as many parents will not get involved with their own children’s studies, but will quickly blame the educators.

Disadvantage

What the Sound Off said about single parents (not specifically moms) was that kids with bad parents, and single parents with jobs (having to work to pay the rent), will be at a disadvantage with virtual learning. That is still true despite your taking issue without reading the entire Sound Off.

Reckless danger

Tate Reeves just signed our death wish. Has he not seen the data for Harrison and Jackson Counties? Don’t we have more cases than George County? I will give him a big fat “I told you so” when our numbers go up.

Europe’s example

Did you know that many countries in Europe have allowed students to return to the classroom without any spike in COVID?

Vote green

The pain from my father’s diabetic neuropathy was so severe that I could not rest a bedsheet on his toes. He suffered for years in spite of every legal painkiller prescribed for him, including fentanyl. His doctors should have had the right to try medical marijuana. It is cruel for our state Legislature to deny that alternative to those in chronic pain.
