Sound Off for Aug. 3, 2020
Not the right thing
Legalizing marijuana in any form and for any so-called noble purpose is not the right thing to do! Beware of these campaigns to release another intoxicant on society — which will eventually negatively affect the young and poor and others most vulnerable. Follow the money.
Yes to Initiative 65
I’m so tired of gloom and doom people that are worried legalizing something they don’t like will ruin the world. I’ve been to places with legalized marijuana and they are very nice. This argument was used when legalizing alcohol in Mississippi. Liquor stores are some of the cleanest businesses on the coast. Could a pot store next to a playground be any worse than the pawn shop, or the gun store?
Against the order?
Since the governor just extended the Safe Return executive order until 8/17, how can schools open? The order restricts indoor gatherings to 10 people: are schools limiting rooms to 10 people? Does any rational person believe that bringing large groups of kids together will reduce the number of COVID 19 infections? I hate to say it but maybe Jackson has it right going all virtual for the fall semester.
Lessons learned
One good lesson this pandemic has taught us about our school systems. We could eliminate over half of the buildings, 80% of the administrations, consolidate the districts and save a ton of money. I has become apparent kids can be educated online at home. Who needs to spend so many tax dollars on useless buildings and personnel? Jackson County alone has four separate school districts, consolidate them into one and still educate the youth as we plan to do now.
Long haul
Most if not all research related to COVID-19 is anecdotal, meaning not proven but observed to be effective or ineffective. So young persons that think you will survive COVID unscathed, take heed. Long-term effects are unknown. If a virus can make you sick enough to be on a ventilator for weeks, what are the long-term effects? Will a survivor be needing a lung transplant by the time they are 30? 40?
