Sound Off for July 15, 2020
For the doubters
Outstanding article written by Isabelle Taft in “Coast barber dies from COVID-19, widow speaks.” Should especially be read by those who doubt the seriousness of the coronavirus.
Packed church
Saturday there were about 500 cars parked at a church in Woolmarket. I think you could predict with certainty where the next epicenter will be in Mississippi.
Recollection
I reluctantly agreed to changing our state flag, but I will never agree to changing the name of the Stennis Space Center. My recollection of Senator Stennis was that he fought hard for all the people of Mississippi.
Character
I hope those that are calling for the senator’s name to be removed from the space center and aircraft carrier look further into the statesman’s character and the respect his peers had for him. Often when two senators would disagree on an issue, they would trust Sen. Stennis to arbitrate and settle the dispute. I feel the naming of the space center and the Navy carrier was not a thoughtless decision.
Joe’s taxes
News flash! Joe’s taxes have been submitted since before the 2008 election, except for Trump’s first two years in office. There have been multiple credible news sources that have reported this.
Half agree
I very seldom agree with Reeves, but I feel he was right to veto this latest criminal justice bill giving the most violent offenders a chance at serving just 50% of their sentence. He probably should have signed the non-violent criminal justice bill, though.
Shame on you
Once again showing his contempt for fellow Americans, Richard Harkness’ letter to the editor (Sunday) compared Trump supporters to “ape-like hominids.” Condescending groupthink like this is why Trump was elected.
Tourists
Harrison County has mask mandate. Louisiana has mask mandate. Hancock County is wide open. Take a ride along Beach Blvd next weekend. Count the tags from the areas where masks are required and bars are closed. Watching the numbers rise!
