Sound Off for July 14, 2020

Thou shalt

Guess the Bible didn’t get the Supreme Court’s ruling on the use of the word “shall.” I found the Sun Herald’s link to the explanation interesting. We were always taught in all my years with the federal government that “shall” was the formal “must.” Guess they changed that. I’ll bet whoever wrote the governor’s new executive order had that former usage in mind. He needs to have them rewrite it and change “shall” to “must.” It’s really wishy-washy and ineffective the way it’s currently written.

Tate R.

Comedian Ron White does a routine, “They call me Tater Salad,” in which he talks about having to give his dog medicine in a ball of cheese. Well our governor, Tate R., shouldn’t be cheese-coating the bitter pill we need to take on coronavirus. He needs stop following and lead us by implementing orders to keep us all safe. He needs to take the heat and stop apologizing for being “caught” not wearing a mask.

Need a leader

Once again, another lame attempt by our governor to fight the COVID-19 virus by issuing his executive order on face mask use. “Shall” is not the same as “must” or “mandatory.” And enforcement is left to local officers, with no consequences for those who do not comply. And in effect for one week only. Mississippi is in dire need of a real leader.

Time to act

Take heed from other states leaders! Have customers sign in with contact inf0 to be able to contact if virus occurs. Have power to remove a liquor license, if warranted. Increase fines to minimum of $1,000 if no social distance or mask! We need to return people to normalization of life. Can’t if no obedience!

Distanced checkout

People should try to shop at stores that have self-checkout kiosks. These stores offer a much safer way to practice social distancing. I didn’t like self-checkout at first, but love them now.

PPP

Will businesses that received money from the Paycheck Protection Program even though they have continued to thrive throughout COVID be held accountable? Will they be required to pay back money that’s not being passed down to their hard-working employees?
