Sound Off for June 23, 2020

A difference

To “Fair warning,” There is a difference between the Stars and Stripes and the Confederate battle flag. Yes, slavery flourished under the Stars and Stripes, but the nation under that flag fought to abolish it while the Confederacy fought to maintain slavery. Why is that difference so hard to understand?

Riots?

Whats this world coming too? Riots, taking down statues, changing the flags, really? I am ashamed to be an American and to live in south Mississippi.

Piers closed

This last weekend they had a fishing tournament that attracted hundreds of people, yet the other fishing piers were closed. Makes no sense to me, perhaps some on can explain it.

Change Columbus Day

I’m an Italian and when I was young, I was proud of Columbus Day. Not so much anymore so I wouldn’t mind making Juneteenth a federal holiday instead of Columbus Day.

Please teach history

When I taught in a midwestern university and, before that, in a Florida high school, I asked students who MLK Jr. was. The most frequent answer was, “someone in the Civil War.” Please consider teaching students (and adults) more about American history.

No flag

Can any one tell me why we need a flag? No one pledges allegiance to the flag of Mississippi. Get rid of it.

Ship Island

It seems the National Park Service is “just close it-happy” when it comes to Ship Island. With miles and miles of pristine beaches and clear Gulf water, why would they close the entire island? The only damage is to the ferry docks and concession areas. This boat dock/pier damage is normal after any type of storm! But to close the entire island to fishermen and beachgoers should be reviewed!

SEC mandates

Does the state of Mississippi need to submit new flag proposals to Greg Sankey (SEC commissioner) for approval? Does he have any other mandates for our state?
