Sound Off for June 21, 2020

A very happy birthday

First I want to say to never underestimate the power of the written newspaper of Sun Herald. Now I have received 307 birthday cards. Thank you to the gentleman who brought a cake to my front door, and I received flowers and beautiful bowl of fruits and candy on my front porch. I also got banana bread, two scratch-off tickets, bookmarks, homemade cards, etc. Cards came from a judge, doctor’s office, police dept., church and a jail. Oldest was in their ’90s, youngest a 12-yr-old girl. Out of state cards from NYC, Wis., Ill., Calif., Texas, Florida and Alabama. All filled with very loving thoughts which has filled my heart. I wish I could have a party and invited everyone.

Place for everything

Beauvoir would be a perfect, appropriate repository for the Confederate statues that are coming down. It’s a museum that preserves Confederate heritage. And you have to pay admission to enter, so only people who want to be reminded of this period in our state’s history will have to view it.

Under the rug

As an 80-year-old white lady who graduated with honors from high school and college, myself and so many others knew nothing about the Tulsa race riots until now. Like so many ugly incidents in history, they were swept under the rug. They were not taught in our history classes. Thank goodness for our local and national media outlets who are telling the whole story and educating us senior citizens.

Comply

To “more respect,” when folks obey the law and comply with the police we will experience mutual respect! Nuff said.

Liability

What happened to Connie Moran is an issue of liability. If those officers left her where she was and she managed to get hurt, they would be blamed for not taking her in. They have to protect themselves. That’s our current culture. Sue everybody.

RIP

May he rest in peace, peace officer Blair. COVID-19, though, didn’t stop hundreds from attending his funeral, including Gov. Reeves, who wore no mask. That’s way more than the mandated limit for public gatherings. Oh right, those rules are just for the rest of us. Hope that not too many mourners who attended get sick and die.
