Sound Off for June 19, 2020

Juneteenth

How many of us know about Juneteenth and why it’s celebrated. Let’s take some time to find out and maybe have a conversation about it. A little knowledge and conversation could go a long way to helping us understand each other.

COVID

Today had one of the biggest spikes of COVID cases to date. And yet the City of Biloxi has two large gathering events coming up this weekend and a Festival at the Farmer’s Market next week. Who is making the decisions for the city?

Keep business open

112 new COVID cases since June 7, 23 in one day. Just in Harrison county. Y’all keep running around refusing to wear masks and distance. All y’all are gonna be whining when Reeves declares Harrison County high-risk and puts those restrictions back in place because he couldn’t trust adults to be responsible? As Dr Dobbs said “masks keep businesses open.”

Cancel culture

Apologize for what you think, your hat, your shirt, your tweets, for being white, being black, for backing the blue, for not kneeling, or kneeling and for being born. Cancel culture will end in flames.

More respect

Connie Moran’s “ordeal” is similar to what many people of color and poor people experience and have experienced for decades. This is not new, it is only the fact that it happened to a well-known person that makes it stand out. The sooner all of us realize and do something about this the sooner there will be more respect for everyone, including the police.

Inclusion

Your port always has, but now your entire City of Gulfport exudes fresh air. Thank you for removing the Confederate emblem flag. Harrison County supervisors, if you have any Confederate statues on public or taxpayer-funded property, remove them now. City of Long Beach, please consider changing the name of your main street from Jefferson Davis to Town Green Avenue.

Mosquito state

I’ve lived in here all my life and never once heard Alabama called the Magnolia State. That has always been Mississippi’s nickname. The Stennis flag is OK. But I say end the debate and put a mosquito on it. Who can argue with that?
