Sound Off for May 27, 2020

Not flat

The Letter to the Editor writer “Open things up” should get their facts straight before submitting a letter. They state the goal of flattening the curve has been achieved. They further state the curve has flattened. In fact, May 21-22 was the highest back-to-back, two-day total for infections in Mississippi. By far.

Two different tests

Lumping the COVID-19 live virus (nasal) and antibody (sera) test results together has the potential to double count, once while the disease is active and later after “presumably cured.” It may not be a big problem now since the percentage is low, but will certainly figure in as the number of antibody tests climb. Dr. Dobbs needs a biostatistician on his team so they don’t make mistakes like that.

Facts don’t lie

These are proven scientific facts, not speculation: 1. If you smoke cigarettes, you are more likely to die and harm others around you; 2. If you drive drunk, you are more likely to die and harm others around you; 3. If you don’t wear a mask and practice social distancing during a COVID pandemic, you are more likely to die and harm others around you.

Back to normal

The more people follow the rules, like wearing masks, social distancing etc. The faster things can get back to normal.

Precautions

If you hate wearing a mask, you’re really not going to like the ventilator.

Take Two Knees

Yes, the First Amendment gives you the right to take a knee to protest police brutality but should not be done while the National Anthem is being played. The writer should take two knees and pray for those who made the ultimate sacrifice to serve our country.

Civil liberties

If I smoke in casinos and other public places, I am endangering your health. If you don’t wear a mask in public and casinos, you are endangering my health. Where is the line drawn in the rights of each citizen to contribute to health and safety their fellow man? Is your health more important than mine?

Praying for you

To a wonderful young man, Wyatt Taliancich, from our family to yours, our thoughts and prayers are with you as you fight this.
