Sound Off for May 15, 2020
Stay home
Harrison County residents: Stay home! Our COVID-19 numbers are going up. If you get it, it can spread to us. Use your mask!
Political rules
We should remember there are three primary rules that politicians follow: 1. Do or say whatever you need to in order to get elected. 2. Do or say whatever you need to in order to get reelected. 3. See rules #1 and #2.
All for nothing?
Despite 1,800 American deaths per day and rising infection rates in many states — at least 41 governors have begun easing restrictions — or are poised to begin. Meeting the key benchmarks established by our public health officials are ignored. Do we really want to do this all over again?
Too much tension
We need to stop all this nonsense about the Republicans screaming this and protesting that and the other side screaming the Democrats do this and protest that. We have got to put an end to all this division and start acting like Americans. We the people run this country not the president or Congress. I understand we have differences but we must rise together.
Silly is as silly does
People who protest against having to wear virus protection masks during this pandemic should next protest against having to wear shoes and shirt into stores and restaurants. After all, the requirement to wear a mask is only for awhile whereas the other seems to be permanent. Horrors!
Stay sheltered
Concerning our current unpleasantness, some of the best quotes with which I agree include: Where is the economy if people are dying?; To stay home is to love your country; and if it’s okay to post “no shirt, no service,” why not “no mask, no service?”
Incorrect
The Sound Off regarding unemployment insurance is incorrect. Employers pay. No employee pays for this. No union pays. You can loosely claim “taxes” pay since the federal government administers the program as well as one half of the benefits paid and the state picks up the rest. But then again, taxes pay for a lot of things that don’t necessarily mean I’m entitled to or earned the rights to them or their use, for example a naval destroyer, just because I pay taxes yet I reap the benefits.
