Sound off for May 12, 2020

Reaction to mayor’s speech

As Forrest Gump’s mother told him “Stupid is as stupid does.” As an elected official and mayor of Ocean Springs, Shea Dobson must be responsive to the needs of his constituents. When it came to the safety of citizens he chose to align himself with the few that do not practice wearing a mask, social distancing, or disinfecting their hands, clothes, or anything they touch. I don’t like the fact that my chances of survival seemed to be linked to the common sense (or lack thereof) of others.

Leadership

I applaud the right to protest in the USA, and protesting against being told to stay home is certainly valid. By all means, go out and enjoy this beautiful spring. I know I am. My concern is the mayor of Ocean Springs, who previously pleaded for residents to stay home, get out of the bars, beaches and downtown, has completely flipped and is a speaker at a rally protesting government intervention. Meanwhile, Ocean Springs still has signs posted to restrict gatherings. Why would we ever listen to the man again?

One step at a time

If you fail a grade in school, do you advance to the next grade? No! Then, if we have not tamed Covid-19, then why would you advance to the next step by opening more businesses?

Common sense

It seems common sense has gone off the rails, concerning coronavirus. If you want to wear a mask, wear one. If you don’t want to interact with people who choose not to, then stay 6 feet away. We all have basic rights according to the Constitution and Bill of Rights, and no-one’s rights usurp another, regardless of where you come down on protection from any virus.

Different threats

So I guess we should keep all other cars off the road because the drivers would be a threat to me as I drive the road. They could injure/kill me through no fault of my own. Shall we reduce the speed limit to 30 mph on the interstate and force cars to stay 60 feet apart?

Please quit

Please quit, Bret. You’re just making things worse. You now say that you did 3 years worth of public service announcements. Well, after 3 years, don’t you think you were a little slow in getting paid?
