Sound Off for April 23, 2020
No worse
To the reader who thinks we have been through worse viruses, I would like to say that I have been an ICU nurse for over 30 years. I work in New Orleans right now, and have never seen anything like this in the U.S. ICU full of COVID-19 patients on ventilators, many dying every day. Alone except medical staff. Check out the Times-Picayune with 8 pages of obituaries. Still think we are overreacting?
Worry
I’ll be glad when the worrywarts here can stop complaining about people not social distancing and can go back to complaining about how people drive instead.
Just a word
Word to the protesters. You would not have handled being on the Gulf Coast after a major hurricane when you can’t have access to your money, where everything is closed and you’re without power for two weeks not to mention cooking on a butane stove. What a bunch of wimps.
Perspective
It seems that while less than two tenths of a percent of Mississippi’s population has contracted the coronavirus, about 3.5% of the population have lost their jobs. The cure may be worse than the problem.
Can’t get through
I filed for unemployment, but I have an expired debit card from EPPICard, but the funds are the card. I cannot talk to a representative regarding a new card, it refers you to the unemployment office that you either get no answer or on hold forever. Who else can I call?
Disrespect
To “Just Like Always,” You said your choosing not to wear a mask has nothing to do with disrespect for others. I disagree. Just because you don’t feel sick doesn’t mean you’re not a carrier. I’m over 65, putting me in the high-risk category. My husband is even more at risk because he has cancer and is undergoing chemo treatments. We only leave the house when we’re out of food and to go to his treatments. I’m not even allowed to go with him. We wear face coverings out of respect for others.
Bravo
In reference to Bo Alawine’s letter to editor, I say bravo sir and thank you for speaking the truth. I hope your mother has recovered and wish health and happiness.
