Sound Off for April 22, 2020

Congrats

Congratulations to the Sun Herald on your move to the historic Hewes Building in downtown Gulfport. In this day and age, this is so practical and convenient. After the COVID mess is over, I look forward to visiting you there.

Definition needed

It’s funny how as I get older, I learn hip new words when talking to my adolescent son. In regards to the current pandemic, he said, “Our leaders have really ‘fulmered’ this situation.” When I asked what this odd verb “fulmered” meant, I was told it was just another word for “failed” and when used as a noun in the present tense, “fulmer” means “failure.” Has anyone else ever heard this?

Wait for decline

The 300 new state-wide coronavirus cases reported on April 18 is the highest one-day increase since the pandemic began. Looking at the figures it’s hard to see the logic behind opening the beaches and lakes and lowering restrictions on some businesses. It would seem to make more sense to wait until we see a significant decline in numbers.

Name one

“Just like always,“ who says “we have survived worse viruses without all of this overreaction,” what worse viruses have we survived? There has never been anything like this since the 1918 Spanish flu. I assume you were not alive then. Name one.

Do you part

I consider it to be selfish and inconsiderate of anyone not to be wearing a mask in public. I wear a mask to protect others, and in return I would like others to protect me as well.

Both ways

States were left on their own in this pandemic. Trump said it was not the federal government’s place and left it up to each state to handle things so each did what they felt was necessary. Now Trump wants to try to claim he has total authority and pressure states to reopen with ridiculous protests? You can’t have it both ways. If you couldn’t help when it was needed, don’t bother now.

Survival

People protesting all over the country need money. The unemployment backlog isn’t helping, house payments car payments are due. The money owed supports even more employment. Just simple math.
