Sound Off for April 20, 2020
Earned benefit
To fellow “old and crusty,” I strongly disagree! The Keesler commander’s callous decision to restrict military retiree access to the Commissary remains unfair and discriminatory! There are many more military retirees in this area than active duty. Commissary, BX and medical privileges are are among the valued and hard-earned benefits for those who long served in war and peace — and not under the control by a local commander.
Too crowded
It is obvious that the base commander at Keesler AFB is not concerned about retirees catching the virus by allowing them only two days a week to shop. By spreading people out over seven days they can do more social distancing. A friend went Tuesday and said it was so packed and they had three lines with no more than an arm’s lengths between them, that will sure help spread the virus.
Groceries vs. coronavirus
To the person that was “livid” about not being able to shop at the commissary, what do you think the base commander is more concerned about, the health and welfare of the students and staff on base, or if some retiree has groceries? We are asked to shelter in place and that is what most of us are doing. I am retired also, and rather than taking a chance of catching the virus by going to the commissary, we order online. If everyone would stay home, we could get through this much quicker.
Act of kindness
Tuesday morning while waiting for Walmart to open for senior shopping at 6 a.m,. a wonderful lady had a basket of homemade masks. She was going down the line asking people if they would like one. I picked one out, it was very well-made. She was giving them away free. It was chilly and windy outside, but this woman was thinking of others first. I hope she see this cause I want to thank her very much. She renews my faith in humanity.
A little communication
I received a correspondence from MDES informing me that my payment was credited to my debit card, which I don’t have. Naturally I couldn’t get through to anyone there. All I want to know is if and when my card has been sent to me. If you can’t answer the phone, at least put out some kind of notice on your website.
