Sound Off for March 11, 2020

Arcane law

Today I, like I’m sure many other voters, wanted to vote for some GOP and some Democratic candidates but was prevented. How is this one man, one vote? Change this arcane law, even Louisiana doesn’t do this.

Voter fun facts

For illuminative purposes, question one on the Mississippi application to vote is, “are you a citizen?” Again, in the affidavit portion, question one affirms the applicant is a citizen before he/she signs their name, thus testifying all to be true. With all the safeguards, and especially a photo ID, for the secretary of state to request further proof of citizenship is nothing but an obvious attempt to depress voting.

Drugs

Just read in the paper Tuesday that once again this state of Mississippi is going to nothing about the kratom here. The prisons are going downhill and perps are getting away with a slap on the wrist and nothing being done about the Mardi Gras doll episode.

Don’t dismiss COVID-19

Please don’t dismiss the seriousness of the coronavirus by pointing out that flu kills many people every year. Deaths caused by Covid-19 are in addition to flu. We don’t need yet another grim reaper assaulting us!

Panic

The flu has killed 20,000 Americans this season alone and no one is panicking, so why is the lowly coronavirus causing the stock market to crash?

Bad or worse

We can’t possibly know if the coronavirus is worse than previous pandemics until it’s over. What we do know is the coronavirus is shaping up to dangerously bad and shouldn’t be played down as some are attempting.

Cancellations?

The ultra-progressive city of Austin has decided to cancel their yearly South By Southwest music festival and forego the over $300 million of event revenue it generates in the interest of public safety. Are the officials of Harrison County and the City of Biloxi considering following their sterling example to proactively reduce coronavirus transmission and canceling upcoming events with expected large crowds in limited areas?
