Sound Off for Feb. 29, 2020

National security

We are spending billions of dollars on a misguided wall-building project that will do nothing to improve national security. Meanwhile, we are confronting a rapidly developing pandemic of the latest coronavirus which escaped from China because the authorities there tried to cover up the story. Now the administration is emulating the Chinese and telling us that stories of the outbreak are exaggerated and the risk is low. We have our national security priorities backward. The U.S. Communicable Disease Center in Atlanta is the gold standard for monitoring contagious diseases, yet it has been muzzled and all information must go through the Office of the Vice President. This political censorship.

Correct decision

The Second Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a lower court decision which will allow the Trump administration to withhold certain funds from jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Justice Department can deny certain federal grants to hundreds of local governments across the country if they continue to protect criminal illegal aliens. That’s a huge victory for President Trump and all who oppose sanctuary policies.

Special treatment

Why isn’t Harvey Weinstein in a prison hospital instead of Bellevue Hospital?

Job loss?

Do you really think anyone involved in a domestic dispute should lose their job or is that just for public servants? Many celebrities have had incidences, but I bet you still watch or listen to them. How about the morals police come to your house and make sure you and your families’ morals are of a high enough standard to qualify you to vote.

Ongoing OS issue

On Thursday, there was a Sound Off published regarding an Ocean Springs business owner’s frustration with the possibility of their customers being run off by loitering transients asking for money. I’ve actually witnessed this numerous times when I’m over that way and have often wondered what the city’s officials are doing to assist their merchants in combating this issue. If the answer is nothing, perhaps they should consider changing the town’s mantra from “City Of Discovery” to “Where Novice Panhandlers Turn Pro.”
