Sound Off for March 1, 2020
Be prepared
Every week, new restaurants or a casino or similar tourist-driven institution announces its opening or expansion. The new lottery ranks right up there where every elected official sings the praises of progress. But it is still not genuine economic development. Whether the corona virus is a real threat or not, states like Mississippi are about to learn a difficult lesson. Governor Bryant did not really accomplish much in his terms and I doubt Reeves will either. When the revenue stops rolling in because of a health threat everyone will realize the value and difference between true industry and tourism.
Dress code
My journey into our local banks have been interesting as I notice the dress code of the staff. Today, a front-desk person was wearing jeans with slits cut into them. It is sad that the customers are dressed better and more appropriately than staff, what does this reflect of the company. It also reveals how society has kept accepting behaviors over time. Wonder what would have been thought or said if I had spoken to a supervisor.
Fair is fair
If Mississippi wants to check the tax info of welfare recipients, maybe they should the check the tax and financial info of those administering the welfare system
Misguided
To the writer lamenting DMV problems being caused by teacher pay, step away from the computer and wake up. Hundreds of millions of tax-break dollars given away by Phil/Tate without any jobs produced and plants closed; 3/4 of a million dollars given to Gulfport Port for 5,000 jobs — bupkus; $4 billion tobacco settlement money — can’t find 2 nickles to rub from that fiasco; all under GOP-ruled Mississippi government. Wanna complain about the DMV? Blame the correct parties!
Simple solution
After a lot of thought over the last six months, I have come to the conclusion that no one should do the things that land you in a Mississippi prison.
Clean slate
In the Friday Sound Off, the question was asked about the $14 million deficit found in the last administration in Pascagoula. There are a few more questions: If this was resolved, where was the money missing? What was the end result on the financial problem plaguing SRHS? What was the final result concerning the retirees of SRHS? This is a new administration in Pascagoula; hopefully the city can answer these questions and start off with a clean slate.
