Sound Off for Feb. 22, 2020

Spurring growth

To “No Tax Credits,” you obviously don’t understand the economics of tax credits for business. Tax credits encourage businesses to invest in assets, create new jobs, increase sources of tax revenue and make the economy better. Cutting programs not part of the tax credit equation.

History facts

Mike Espy claims he will be the first black congressman from Mississippi since Reconstruction. This is an error. Blanche Bruce was an African American senator from Mississippi serving a full term from 1875-81; the previous black senator, Hiram Rhodes Revels, did not serve a full term. Bruce was also the first African American and former slave to preside over the U.S. Senate. And there’s also John R. Lynch, who served from 1873-83 in the House of Representatives, Mississippi’s 6th District. Mr. Espy is also ignoring his own term as a U.S. Representative from 1987 to 1993; also, he’s disregarding Bennie Thompson who has served since 1993.

Good government?

If socialized public education is an example of good government, why has the U.S. slid from 6th in education in the industrial word to 27th in about 20 years? We had only moved from 1st to 6th in the previous 40 years. What’s the major change? Federal government involvement.

Ghost towns

Our president has decreed that only active service members can use military hospitals/medical facilities. All military retirees will now have to go to the VA. Of course, why not send thousands of aging folks who served our country faithfully for 20+ years to medical facilities that are all ready over-burdened and under-staffed? Our great military healthcare centers (such as Keesler) will become ghost towns and eventually be shut down, sending active-duty troops just where they can for medical care. President Trump needs to cut the defense budget (since he took $5 billion dollars from Defense for his wall!) and this is a way to do it, despite his many, many promises not to cut retiree and VA benefits. Yet another broken promise.

Fake news

The more the media talks bad about my president Trump, the more I believe in him! Keep it coming.
