Sound Off for Feb. 21, 2020

Flooding

Our rivers and streams have been flooding forever. That is why we have built damns and levees, which by the way, back up the water which causes extreme flooding. The reason the Delta is such great farmland is because of flooding for thousands of years. The Mississippi River has been choked down to one outlet to the Gulf. Where’s the water to go?

Water bills

This getting beyond ridiculous! Can’t hire enough meter readers and won’t/can’t fix bills that are so out of line. Now we are supposed to believe our council can figure a flat rate. Means the seniors are going to be paying more who are on fixed incomes. Seniors are usually very cautious with water and electric bills.

Robbery

I had a septic tank for 28 years with no trouble. Gulfport just installed sewer on our street with threatening letters to homeowners to hook up to it. It was $2,800 for the plumber plus $700 to the city for hookup fees. I just got my first bill in — $19.30 for water and $64.06 for sewer. This is outrageous.

More safety

A blinking yellow light is needed at the pedestrian crossing at the Mary C. on Government Street in the middle of the block. Lighting needs to be increased as well. Save a life!

Black doll

This grown man singled out this young girl and gave her the doll saying, “this is you!” If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck. It is so telling that anyone would rather believe it was harmless fun rather than targeted hatred toward her.

Not a racial issue

Regarding the incident at the Nereid’s parade with the black doll with beads around the neck which the child’s parent interpreted as a noose. Anyone looking at the picture in the Sea Coast Echo can clearly see the doll and other stuffed animals were all secured to a pole on the float with a bead around their necks. It is disturbing that the child’s parent assumed it was a “noose and a hate crime” and as a result has stirred up unnecessary hard feelings among blacks toward white people and going so far as to involve the NAACP for an investigation.
