Sound Off for Feb. 11, 2020

White collar

I can see it now. Co-conspirators found guilty of defrauding Medicare of millions. Sentences were 10 years in jail with 9 1/2 suspended and house arrest for 6 months and restitution. Remember Walker?

Different standards

More than $4 million stolen from Miss. welfare funds: “All were released from jail without having to post bail.” How is that possible? Those indicted had contributed to Gov. Reeves election campaign. Oh, I see.

A mess alright

“Tate Reeves inherited a mess” per Monday’s Sun Herald. What the heck was he doing for eight years as lieutenant governor? Now it was not his doing, and he will take credit for making it all better.

Wasting away

A third Margaritaville project wasting away on payments to contractors. Why doesn’t Jimmy Buffett write a check instead of merely showing up for the photo op when he collects the licensing fee?

Naughty or nice

Browsing at the Inmate Lookup for Jackson County online and I can’t help but to notice that either Ocean Springs is the most well behaved town in the area, or someone is turning a blind eye. Living here, I believe the latter. We’re not that innocent.

Free money

Haven’t won the lottery? Just go to work for the Department of Human Services in the state of Mississippi.

Judging from afar

In response to the “Walking Dead” on Thursday mornings at Fort Maurepas, you may want to consider getting out of your safe, warm, and dry car or home and helping those in need of a hot breakfast. “There, but for the grace of God, go I.”

Setting an example

Just when I thought Sounds Off had reached the limits of pettiness, I was surprised again. On Thursday mornings, a few well-meaning locals provide breakfast and a devotional for some disadvantaged and/or homeless folks at Fort Maurepas, doing as Jesus admonished us to do for “the least of us.” So sorry if that activity offended your senses.

Seabee cinema

Hey, retired military, if you are near the Seabee base and have not gone to the cinema on base you are missing out! It is an excellent experience. And if you use a cane or walker, it is easy to get to in and out of because there are no steps. Give it a try!
