Sound Off for Jan. 22, 2020

No murders

Thousands of conservative gun owners arrived in Richmond, Va,, this past weekend and no murders occurred.

One question

Cold-weather shelters across the Coast are doing wonderful work. As I understand it, most, or all, of the workers are volunteers. Congratulations on the good work you do. I do have one question though: Why do some shelters open before sunset, but some don’t ever seem to open until well after dark? Seems cold-hearted to me.

Another circus?

If the Senate allows the House impeachment managers to take over the Senate and conduct the trial the same way they did in the House of Representatives, it will become the second act of the circus, with the same clowns and ring masters. They had their turn and failed miserably. They don’t get another bite of the apple.

What a joke

I got a good laugh at the short article by the New York Times editorial board announcing the presidential candidates they choose to support. The last paragraph was to specifically to point out the editorial board is separate from the newsroom. What a joke. I have some mountains in south Florida I would like to sell you.

Bring it

Oh please, please ... bring on the global warming.

Undue influence?

I don’t think those senators who are running to be elected president should be allowed to vote in the impeachment trial. They would be voting on their political opponent, and that could influence the upcoming election.

Another question

Like the Sound Off about debtors vs. embezzlers. Why wasn’t former DMR executive Bill Walker been sent to debtors prison?

Strong beliefs

It appears that many of us hold strong beliefs. It may be helpful to be aware that our brains intentionally do things, and often we are completely unaware that our brains are doing them. “Confirmation bias” is a process that operates as part of the unconscious area of our brains. Confirmation bias effects the way we process incoming information. It allows in evidence things that support the beliefs we already hold, and dismisses evidence that conflicts with those beliefs. The result being we become more firmly entrenched in the beliefs we already have and are less able to consider anything that conflicts with those beliefs, regardless of how reasonable they may be. This means we must consciously work against this process to be able to consider other points of view.
