Sound Off for Jan. 21, 2020
Wind pool
There are policies out there that include wind and hail. You can get out of the wind pool and pay a less expensive rate. Call around.
Learn from the best
I opened the paper on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Top article was about the Powerball and a small square below the crease showed it was MLK Jr. Day. What a terrible shame that you chose to focus on gambling and not a leader we should all be remembering and emulating today in our mixed-up world. Our children need to learn from this peaceful and brilliant leader about what is most important in life.
No bill
A Sound Off writer said that they had not received a water bill from the City of Gulfport since November. You’re not alone, it’s been 11/21 since my last bill. Send me a bill so I can pay it!
Not the same
Debtors and embezzlers are not the same thing. Just do your time and don’t pay the restitution like most other embezzlers. Maybe the Walkers can give you some advice on that.
Middle ground
So a person steals $13,000, what should society do about it? There really are only three choices: prison, work release or just let the thief go unpunished. Letting the person go unpunished is bad for society as a whole; prison is a very harsh penalty. Seems to me work release is the best middle ground since this was not a violent crime.
Wrong choice
The article regarding Annita Husband’s incarceration for failing to pay restitution: She was convicted of embezzlement. She’s not the victim here, as the article seems to want us to believe. She committed a crime and is being punished for it by being required to repay what she stole (and perhaps court fees and fines). Period. It’s not debtor’s prison. She had a choice. She could have chosen not to steal.
Same song
My Sound Off related to re-electing the same people year after year made no reference to party affiliation. The response in Sunday’s edition, though, was obviously partisan and reflective of today’s political atmosphere: “Yeah, I may be wrong but look what the other party is doing.”
No good
People confuse “good ole boys” with “good ole country boys.” The latter have guns, trucks, dogs, etc. The former works really hard to keep things the way they were, i.e. only they could vote, be educated, make all decisions, own property, and controlled everything.
