Sound Off

Sound Off for August 1: Why sports betting but no lottery in Mississippi?

Splitting hairs

Mississippi can have casinos and sport betting but no lottery. I would like someone to explain why, when it would bring in more revenues for the whole state.

Scare tactics?

The only thing scary to Long Beach voters is ignorance. I do not know the “bond people,” but I’ve learned about the bond. And yes, it is about the kids, the first responders, the community, updated security, and advanced technology for our future wage-earning contributors to society. In all aspects, a motto from generations past applies today, and to the future: “Be Prepared.” Long Beach, vote “yes” on Aug 2.

LBHS location

Has anyone else wondered why the Long Beach school bond voting location is actually at the high school we’re voting about? I don’t know about anyone else, but I feel the location should have been at a non-school location. How do we know for sure all votes will be handled properly? Especially the “no” votes such as mine. I sure hope that parties on each side of this issue are collecting the votes.

Vote yes

Thank you for recycling a good, old building. Previous grads will know a strong part remains; future grads will have updated security and state-of-the-art technology. Long Beach, vote yes on Aug. 2.

New ideas

Thank you to the Sound Off writer who informed us about the new hearing loop system at Nativity BVM Cathedral for persons with hearing difficulties. I checked it out this weekend. The sound clarity was awesome. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if more public buildings had this looping system for those of us with hearing deficiencies, for example the Saenger Theater? It could be installed during the renovation now under way.

Simple test

I question whether the writer who says they know about diabetes really does. A simple blood test can be administered to determine a person’s blood sugar level. This result will then be used to determine if insulin is needed or if a person is in danger of the harmful effects of a too high sugar level. This test is done through a simple finger stick and is done daily by diabetic patients and nurses. So no, nurse Brannan was not between a rock and a hard place. She should have done her job as a nurse and a human being.

Spray us

We have noticed the City of Gulfport isn’t spraying for mosquitoes and hasn’t all year, at least on our street. They are really thick right now. Is there anyway the residents can get some relief?

Touché

Many Sound Offs are rife with generalizations and little supporting evidence. Reminds me of the saying: “All generalizations are dangerous ... even this one!”
