Sound Off for October 18: Hooray for the Saints and for the First Amendment

Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (9), left, greets New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees (9) last year in New Orleans. At 38 and in his final season under contract, Brees could make a statement about his longevity by outshining Matthew Stafford, who this year became the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback.

Props to the pop

Popcorn trees, aka, Chinese tallow trees, are one of our most beautiful Southern trees. They make the best honey, clean our polluted air, create fall colors, and make the loveliest shade trees.

Beyond censorship

To Kill A Mockingbird was about a period in the 1930s. How could it have been written any other way? It’s not censorship but wanting to sanitize history.

Random schedule

I’m wondering if it is just my neighborhood in Gulfport that trash and recyclables seem to be picked up randomly on any day of the week. Garbage seems to be on the same schedule.

Black and gold!

Shame you already burned your Saints tickets. What a great game Sunday in a great city in the greatest country, a country that was founded on and protected by the First Amendment guaranteeing free speech. Black and gold to the Super Bowl!

Who to blame

It’s official. Obamacare is now Trumpcare and when your healthcare costs spiral out of control next year you’ll know exactly who to blame.

Stand up

To all the people complaining about the football players kneeling when the national anthem is played, I just wonder how many of you watching the game at home while sitting on the couch drinking beer and eating your nachos, get up and put your hand over your heart when the national anthem is played.

Fix this

I would like to thank the HCUA for our new trash service. I love the large recycle can on wheels but for two weeks they picked up my recyclables and both times they left some in the street. and we have not had any trash pickup yet and the pile just gets bigger. I hope they can get their act together and correct these problems.

It’s business

If a member of the military or civilian government employee would take a knee during the national anthem at work, how long would their career last? For that matter, in most states an employee serves “at will” of their employer. If you bring turmoil or public embarrassment to your employer while at work, despite your right to legally demonstrate, you are risking or accepting the outcome. The NFL is big business and not a venue to express personal grievance.
