Sound Off for August 31: Hurricane Harvey is an angry storm

Two kayakers try to beat the current pushing them down an overflowing Brays Bayou in Houston, Texas, Sunday as floodwaters from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey climbed high enough to begin filling second-story homes. The flooding could affect the national flood insurance program as Congress discusses an overhaul of the program.

Good people

Kudos to Cajun Coast Search and Rescue. It’s people like you who make the world a better place.

Big difference

The difference in Apple, Ford and GM’s R&D costs is that they don’t ask their customers to pay for it.

Angry child

I am convinced that Harvey is Katrina’s son and he is madder than she was.

Go ahead

There are laws about handicapped parking spaces, so if you park there without a valid handicapped tag or placard, you risk a ticket and a fine. Parking spaces for pregnant women, on the other hand: that’s a courtesy by the store, but no law says only a pregnant woman can park there. As long as you don’t care about inconveniencing a woman with morning sickness and swollen feet, go ahead and park.

Please explain

Why can’t Cedar Lake Road be raised a foot or two between the church and the bridge? I know it has been like this since the ’70s. I always have to worry if the water is over the road. And I don’t like going through brackish water. You could bring in dirt and pave over that. Why has this never been done?

Could it be?

Glancing down the official list of hurricane names for 2017, I had to laugh when I saw Hurricane Lee coming up. Will our shoreline be crowded with protesters with signs? You just can’t make this stuff up.

Show them all

I am in complete agreement with “show all players.” My dad and I watch the tournaments every weekend and every weekend I complain about how the players don’t get shown. My favorite is Jason Day and sometimes I don’t see him at all. My dad is a Phil Mickleson fan and he also isn’t shown much of the time. So, yes! Please start showing all of the players.

Pray for Texas

As I sit here on the 12th anniversary of Katrina reflecting on how devastating it was I can’t help but see the similarities between Katrina and Harvey. Houston and its devastating flooding like New Orleans and the total destruction of Rockport and Port Aransas like the Mississippi Gulf Coast. All the news focused on Houston and the forgotten Coast 2017 version. Pray for Texas and God bless the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
