Sound Off for August 29: After 12 years, feelings from Katrina haven’t gone away

Hurricanes create a jumble of memories in the same way winds and storm tides jumble people’s belongings. Paul Jermyn, who collects vintage photographs and postcards to document Mississippi Coast history, took this telling one himself after Hurricane Katrina.

No R&D costs?

You pay for research and development (R&D) on every product. In 2016, Apple spent $2.8 billion, Ford spent $7.3 billion and GE spent $5.5 billion as examples. But Mississippi Power cannot recoup any R&D costs?

Show all players

Are there any other golf fans out there that are getting tired of how these tournaments are being filmed? I am a big fan of all the Aussie golf players, being an Aussie myself. But it seems that if you are not up at 15 under or in the top four on the leaderboard, you do not get shown. In this tournament that started Aug. 24, I saw Jason Day today (Sunday) for the first time and Ogilvy and Lieshman and Luck, to name a few, hardly get shown. It is always either a Fowler, Maclroy or Spieth one-man show. I don't care if my player is 25 over, I want to see him shoot a few holes. Start showing all players.

You were warned

When you are told to evacuate and you decide to just "ride it out," you should not get on national TV and complain about the fact that the overwhelmed first responders take too long to get to rescue you.

It’s not the flag

Call that flag what you will. I've had one since 1958. It has never uttered a single word of hate. It has never indicated it wants to attack anyone. It has never kept people from talking to me, regardless of their color. The flag is not the issue. It’s people that hate.

A long road ahead

Even after 12 years, the sinking feelings from Katrina haven't gone away. Watching the people of Texas suffer only brings back memories that I would very much like to bury. Texas has a long road ahead of them, and our thoughts are with them.

For those who need it

Handicapped parking is for the handicapped, not for someone in a hurry who is not handicapped. Handicapped does not meant just because you are obese that it gives you the right to park in a handicapped parking place. I know the world is changing, but I saw a young male park in a pregnant women’s parking place at Winn-Dixie the other day. Really? Also, they have places to return your shopping cart in the parking lot so you don’t have to leave them in a handicap parking place. The Golden Rule might help those who are not handicapped.

Trump blamed

I was joking with my wife yesterday about how President Trump will be blamed for Hurricane Harvey. And guess what? He was, for "inaction" prior to the storm even hitting the Texas coast. Unbelievable. But the Democrat mayor of Houston will get a pass for not calling for evacuation days prior.
