WWII veterans have earned our attention
In reference to the "Iwo Jima survivor shares war tales of high school friends" article (March 6), I must say that I deeply appreciate the stories when our WWII veterans are able to share.
I often look at the obituaries wondering what unit that hero belonged to.
My father couldn't share his experiences. He was a medic in the 20th Infantry Regiment, 6th Infantry Division in New Guinea and the Philippines. Talking about it would bring back nightmares, so my mother always said, "Don't ask him about the war, but if he ever talks about it, listen." I respected that.
When he passed away in 2007, I began a relentless search for any information that would give me even a hint as to what he endured. The information that I have found and what was given to me is priceless.
I am forever grateful to these heroes. I listen to and read every word of what they have to say, thankful for their being able to share.
