Coast's generous casinos should inspire us to give back

I couldn't be more impressed after reading the Sun Herald article "IP Casino gives away $1 million to Coast nonprofits" (Feb. 26).

Boyd Gaming and the IP Biloxi Foundation have given more than $6.5 million in grants since 2006, but the 37 worthy recipients are too numerous to name.

The IP Casino Resort also uses volunteer ushers during each show performance and sends a donation to the Women's Center for Nonviolence. In addition, the Golden Nugget also uses volunteers for their shows and sends a donation to the same women's center.

As a volunteer usher at both casinos, it is gratifying to me that signing up to volunteer benefits such a worthy cause. As a bonus, the volunteers can stay and enjoy the performances.

Mississippi has always been a leader in charitable donations and volunteerism. The IP Casino Resort may be recognized as a large contributor to the nonprofits, but I would be remiss for not stating many other casinos and businesses on the Coast are as generous and bighearted.

Many of the nonprofit organizations here on the Coast all need volunteers.

Our Gulf Coast is brimming with goodwill, and volunteer opportunities are plentiful. You too can be part of this rewarding endeavor. So just don't sit there; reach out, give back and volunteer!
