JENNY GATES: Think of the children this Christmas

During this time of year, most of us prioritize time with family. My Christmas would not be the same without my angelic 5-year-old, persistent 2-year-old, amazing husband, parents and siblings.

Throughout the year, many children, for one reason or another, are away from their families. Some are with foster families they haven't known long, and some are in a children's shelter.

Most of us are so saddened by this we cannot face this reality at all. Some, like myself, donate hours every week to give these children support and kindness. Very few -- some employees and some volunteers -- devote themselves to these children full time. CASA of Harrison County is working overtime this week to make sure these kids have something to celebrate Friday morning. They have worked hard to gather as many Christmas presents as they can, and they continue to work hard to distribute them to children in need.

I thank God for their hard work. I thank God for their tenacity and courage to persevere where most of us fail to tread. It is often a thankless job.

Thank a court appointed special advocate. Be for the child.
