LIZ SERPA: Celebrate the holidays by giving back
During a time when it seems that there is no good news, I want to share some good news with our readers.
I live in Tradition, a community that finds delight in sharing and being involved with outreach. In the spirit of the holidays, I must boast about my neighborhood. With this being the busiest time of the year, the altruistic nature demonstrated by our Tradition neighborhood abounds. Outreach to those in need has been the focus of our activities for the last several weeks.
Our neighborhood kicked off the holiday season with a pantry scavenger hunt that was conducted for Thanksgiving. Our food list included everything except the turkey. While the turkey was donated through the Brenda Williams Pantry, we provided the "fixings" to go with the turkey so that 95 families could share a bountiful Thanksgiving meal at home.
We took our generosity one step further and had a Toys for Tots drive, which was another success. The saying "It is better to give than to receive" has given all of us in the Tradition neighborhood the true sense of giving back.
I think this feeling can be contagious. Open your hearts this year, and you, too, will know the joy of giving. Merry Christmas, y'all.
