MARTHA CHAMBERS: Lead by example to keep 'Christ' in Christmas
On Nov. 13, Richard Sandberg wrote a letter and said, "... the world may only see a group of angry and petty people who are pouting because they are no longer in the cultural majority." He continued, "Let's stop the 'war on Christmas' and just celebrate the joy we have in Jesus and the hope we want others to see."
I agree heartily with hoping others will see our joy, and certainly the Christian defense of Christmas should proceed without rancor. I disagree on another matter, though -- not in a spirit of quarrelsomeness or disrespect but in seeking truth. Whether protesting a Starbucks red cup or a red cup with a different holiday theme as the right battle to choose, we do need to oppose the war on Christmas by words as well as by example: "... what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops" (Matthew 10:27).
It may seem like a losing battle, but we put winning in God's hands as we go out into the world and share the gospel in every sphere of our lives in a loving manner.
Suppose people of good will hear only the secular voice and not the Christian one? Well, God becoming man won't seem very important because silence implies approval.
When good men do nothing, or too little, evil prevails.
