JIM RANDOLPH: Properly dispose of toxic, hazardous waste
I'm constantly amazed that people put out televisions, refrigerators and other electronic and hazardous waste on garbage day.
When such toxins enter a landfill, water leaches through the fill material, picking up toxins and carrying them out as effluent. While landfill operators try to treat the liquid outflow the best they can, the system is not designed to remove heavy metals and all contaminants.
On the second Saturday of every month, the Harrison County Environmental Commission sponsors a hazardous waste drop-off at the Work Center on Lorraine Road in Gulfport.
Hancock and Jackson counties and Coast Electric sponsor periodic hazardous waste programs that are well-advertised.
Please save your electronics and toxic materials and deliver them for proper disposal.
