Readers views: Journalism standards + draining the swamp
Bad choices
In Leonard Pitts’ article “Hillary Clinton was right about those deplorables,” he points out that progressives have more education than conservatives and are therefore intellectually superior people.
I read articles by Mr. Pitts because I enjoy reading a variety of perspectives. That being said, this article is hatred and bigotry masquerading as journalism. As if higher education always equals superior intellect.
So by Mr. Pitts criteria, we should assume that every 60-year-old farmer in the Mississippi Delta is dumber than every first semester freshman. Using Mr. Pitts’ laughable methodology, you could assert the superiority of many groups and these assertions could then have you labeled as racist, sexist or homophobic.
Imagine if Mr. Pitts had stated that Japanese-Americans were better educated than Chinese-Americans and were therefore superior. Would the Sun Herald print the article? Of course not. Yet somehow this anti-intellectual hit piece met the “deplorable” standards of the Sun Herald.

A big job
When President Trump said he was going to drain the Washington, D.C., swamp, I don’t think he had any idea how many swamp monsters there were or who they were.
At least he is trying.
No one else has even pretended to try. Hope he doesn’t give up.

Let’s talk
If you are are Jewish, would you meet and talk peacefully with a Muslim?
If you are Zoroastrian, would you meet and talk peacefully with a Christian?
If you are Iranian, would you meet and talk peacefully with and Iraqi?
If you are Chinese, would you talk peacefully with a Japanese?
If you are of any nationality would you meet and talk peacefully?
First you must get the ego out of the way, because the ego is evil.
Next, you must remove the feeling of superiority that is in your way.
If you want peace, then let’s talk peace and security.
Do it now. You can meet in peace and leave in peace. What will end war right now? Answer is one God, mankind is one and religions are one. Discuss those issues that separate or divide yourselves. Today is the day and now is the time.

An investment?
The G.I. bill of World War II gave a college degree to nearly 9 million veterans at a cost of $4 billion.
However, that cost was recouped through the higher taxes paid by the recipients.
In other words, it was an investment, not an expense.
Given this actual success, Bernie Sanders’ proposal of adding two years (of vocational training) to public education does not look so far-fetched. Most trades require only two years training and tradesmen earn more than unskilled labor.
For those wanting college, it is easier to pay for two years than for four years.
