HB 1523 brings hate, suffering

I am a 63-year-old heterosexual female Air Force brat who has lived in Mississippi for 51 years. I am also a business owner who works very hard. I believe in Jesus Christ and His love for everyone.

In the past I voted Republican. For the first time in 51 years I am truly ashamed of Mississippi and my Republican Party affiliation. Gov. Phil Bryant, you and others are responsible for that. By passage of HB 1523 you have brought us closer to the bottom of the list than we have ever been. You have made it acceptable to discriminate against people in the name of religion.

As I prepare this letter, tears are streaming down my face because my sister, sister-in-law and all the people I love who happen to be part of the LGBTQ community have been given yet another reason to suffer. I don’t love these people because they are gay. I love them because they are kindhearted, loving, intelligent people who also happen to be voting citizens of this state.

Governor, my heart aches for all those who will suffer because of this hate bill. We will all strive to bring our state up from the pits with or without you. As for those business owners who celebrate this legislation, you must be making more money than you know what to do with. I for one will welcome with open arms anyone who honors me by doing business in my shops.
