Invest 99, an area of low pressure that was disorganized as it made its way past the Florida Keys on Sunday, is now Tropcial Depression Nine, according to the National Hurricane Center.
NHC says the depression, formed in the Florida Straits, could become Tropical Storm Hermine by Monday afternoon once the system is in the Gulf of Mexico.
The National Weather Service said the depression was moving west at 9 mph, making its way into the Gulf of Mexico. It’s expected to dump 1 to 4 inches of rain on the Florida Keys through Wednesday.
NHC’s 4 p.m. update predicts the system could make landfall sometime Thursday evening.
The National Weather Service said Sunday that conditions in the Gulf of Mexico are favorable for tropical development as Tropical Depression Nine is being pushed that way by an upper-level high pressure system.
