One private school closing; most districts waiting to decide

At least one Gulfport private school will dismiss early today, while other Coast officials watch and wait before making a decision.

Westminster Academy on Lawson Avenue will dismiss classes at 12:30 p.m., said school secretary Darla Fulton.

Students there range from 2 years to sixth-grade.

School superintendents across South Mississippi are watching Tropical Depression 13, which could be upgraded to Tropical Storm Lee later today. Officials say the storm will bring heavy rains and possible severe weather to the Gulf Coast throughout the weekend.

Hancock County Superintendent Alan Dedeaux is out this morning examining low-lying roads and will consult with emergency management officials before he makes a decision for early dismissal.

Other officials are monitoring the weather and will make a decision later today if needed.

Many districts like Pascagoula, Ocean Springs and Harrison and Jackson counties don’t expect to let students out early unless the weather drastically worsens.

Coast schools are closed Monday for Labor Day.

Athletic officials are meeting throughout the day with superintendents and emergency management officials to determine if football games tonight will continue as planned. So far, none have been cancelled. updates this story as information becomes available.
