Emergency managers have urged residents to stay home as snow begins to blanket South Mississippi, with road closings already announced.

The city of Ocean Springs has just announced that snow and ice have closed the Biloxi Bay Bridge between Ocean Springs and Biloxi, and the city of Biloxi says Interstate 110 is closed south of Bayview Avenue, where southbound motorists must exit.

“We’re seeing ice and snow on basically all roads south of Wiggins now,” Anna Ehrgott, public information officer with the Mississippi Department of Transportation said Tuesday morning. “Snow plows are headed to the Coast now. “

Up to 6 inches of snow could accumulate, the first significant snowfall since 1996, when the coast had an inch of snow on the ground. The record for snow was on Dec. 31, 1963, when the city of Gulfport reported 7 inches of snow, the National Weather Service says.

“Mississippi Department of Transportation crews will closely monitor weather conditions and highways and bridges, and be ready to respond as the winter weather moves in,” an agency news release said Tuesday morning. “Motorists should remain cautious, especially on bridges and overpasses.”
