Coast beaches are closed until further notice, thanks to Hurricane Nate, the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says.

MDEQ has closed the beaches as a precaution while hurricane debris is removed and the water is sampled for bacteria levels, the agency says.

Local officials might open areas of the sand beaches, but not the water, at their discretion. MDEQ will open beach areas for water contact only after two consecutive samples show acceptable bacteria levels.

To receive beach advisories, send an email to rwilbur@mdeq.ms.gov, text "MDEQbeach" to 95577, or follow MDEQ on Twitter.
