More heavy rainfall expected in South MS, LA. How much rain is coming?
A flash-flood warning has ended in South Mississippi, but Coastal counties are under a flood watch through Friday morning.
A wet airmass that has settled over the area is expected to produce “multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms” through Tuesday night, the National Weather Service says. The watch area is expected to receive 3 to 6 inches of rainfall through Thursday night. Isolated totals of up to 10 inches of rainfall are possible through Thursday.
A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding, while a flood warning means flooding is occurring or imminent.
The flood watch applies to areas in southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi. Areas included on or near the Mississippi Coast are Hancock, Harrison, Jackson and Pearl River counties.
Monday morning, radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain across east central Harrison and southwestern Jackson counties, the NWS says. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell, with another 2 to 3 inches expected Monday.
Hazards from the heavy rainfall include flash flooding of small creeks and streets, along with highways, streets and underpasses in urban areas. Flooding also can be expected in poorly drained and low-lying areas. The stormy weather follows a historic level of May rainfall.
