It was historic: The snow started at dawn and kept falling until residents in some parts of the region reported accumulation of up to 9 inches. It closed schools and offices. Residents bundled up to throw snowballs and built snowmen on beaches.
It was the first snowfall since 2014, when 0.2 inches fell on the Coast. But the last time the region had seen so much snow was in 1963, when forecasters recorded 7 inches at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
The snowstorm’s anniversary arrives as Mississippi prepares for another blast of winter. There is a chance of snow this weekend in the northernmost part of the state, and freezing rain could reach southwest Mississippi. Meteorologists are urging residents to watch the forecast and be cautious if ice forms on roads and bridges.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Slidell said Tuesday that the Coast will likely stay above freezing and avoid the worst of the weather.
