Freezing temps are forecast for South MS. See timeline and how cold it could get
Cold weather is expected to plunge temperatures across South Mississippi below freezing later this week and chill the region through the weekend.
The temperature, which hit 33 degrees Monday morning in Gulfport, could fall again early Tuesday with light freezes along the Pearl River and the Pascagoula River in Jackson County. Anywhere north of the coastline could also feel an hour or two of freezing temperatures.
High temperatures this week will hover in the 50s and 60s. But a cold front on Wednesday will unleash another freeze across the region, according to the National Weather Service.
Low temperatures Thursday night and Friday morning are expected to fall in the upper 20s, according to Danielle Manning, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Slidell. She said the freeze is expected “across the entire Mississippi Coast.”
Temperatures in some areas along the immediate coastline could hit just above freezing. The moderate freeze is less likely to impact plumbing, but Manning said it could keep some places below freezing for 6 to 10 hours. Forecasters are urging residents to protect plants and bring pets inside.
The cold weather could also mean frost appears several mornings this week in communities along and north of Interstate 10, including Diamondhead, Saucier, D’Iberville and Vancleave.
