Bundle up, y’all — some seriously cold weather is coming to South MS. Here’s the forecast

Freezing temperatures and frost could cover the Mississippi Coast this weekend as a cold front moves in just before Christmas.

Early-morning temperatures on Saturday and Sunday could be freezing or near it, according to the National Weather Service in Slidell. Frost is also likely across the region.

Forecasters said Poplarville, Picayune and Pascagoula are most likely to freeze, but cities across South Mississippi could feel just as cold.

Danielle Manning, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Slidell, said low temperatures at night could dip to 33 degrees in Kiln and 34 in Gulfport. She said Pascagoula could feel colder because cool, dense air will slide south through the Pascagoula River valley.

The coldest temperatures will come Friday and Saturday nights, Manning said. The frost will start after 4 a.m. Saturday.

“It’ll be near-freezing across most of the coastal counties,” Manning said.

The cold will come with clear skies and almost zero chance of rain, so forecasters said ice or snow is unlikely. Manning said that by Sunday, shifting winds will bring warmer air across Louisiana and South Mississippi.

Temperatures will rise again before Christmas, and the high on Christmas Day in Gulfport is expected to approach 70 degrees.
