Tropical depression could be Hurricane Lee by the weekend. Here’s what we know
The National Hurricane Center is tracking three tropical disturbances in the Atlantic Ocean, including one expected to develop into a strong hurricane by the end of the week.
Tropical Depression 13 became better organized Tuesday morning, with winds up to 35 knots and is expected to develop into Hurricane Lee by the end of the week.
The potential hurricane’s current trajectory would have it at Puerto Rico by Sunday morning. Lee could also impact the Leeward Islands, southeast of Puerto Rico. Meteorologists have not projected a path for the potential hurricane beyond that point.
The NHC also is monitoring a strong wave off the coast of Africa that could develop into a depression. Meteorologists put the chances of the wave forming into a depression in the next week at 70%.
A third disturbance, the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Franklin, is currently north of the Azores and heading southeast. The system has been erratic and has not been forecasted to cross the Atlantic.
