Tropical Storm Bret is expected to become a hurricane this week. Here’s the forecast.
Tropical Storm Bret has formed in the Atlantic and could strengthen into a hurricane later this week near the Caribbean, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Monday.
Bret has maximum winds of 40 mph and is moving west at 21 mph, according to the NHC’s 5 a.m. EST tropical outlook.
The tropical storm is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and move across the Lesser Antilles on Thursday and Friday, but the NHC said there is a “larger than usual uncertainty” in the storm’s track forecast.
“It is too early to specify the location and magnitude of where these hazards could occur,” the NHC said.
It’s also too soon to know if the storm will threaten the U.S. and which states could be at risk for a landfall.
“Everyone in the Lesser Antilles, Puerto Rico, and Virgin Islands should closely monitor updates ... and have a hurricane plan in place,” The NHC tweeted.
A second tropical wave that formed off the coast of Africa on Sunday now has a 40% chance of formation over the next seven days.
The two systems have formed early in the 2023 hurricane season and have already caught the attention of Weather Channel personality Jim Cantore, who is watching the forecast.
The next name on the 2023 hurricane list is Bret.
